Why is incorporating a practice of gratitude into our every day life so important? Psychology research has shown that having a gratitude practice can increase our happiness, improve health and well-being, strengthen our ability to deal with adversity, and even enhance our relationships. There is always something to be grateful for, even if it is as small as a smile or hug from a loved one, or watching a beautiful sunset. In this practice of gratitude we can find joy and the energy to move through our day.
Recent research is pointing to the fact that the most resilient people—those better able to weather the tests and difficulties that life will ultimately place before us—have a common characteristic: the capacity to be joyful. And what is one of the most effective ways to increase a sense of joy in your life? To daily reflect and acknowledge those things in your life for which you have to be grateful.
Firstly, it puts in to sharp focus how much good there is that we fail to acknowledge in the face of difficulties or frustrations in a day, which have a tendency to be louder in our heads and drown out those good moments. Secondly, if we develop a habit of acknowledging our gratitude daily, we will eventually become much more mindful during our day of those moments while they are actually happening, and as a result will derive even more joy and enjoyment in them. Perhaps we will even ensure that there are more of them every day!
It is relatively easy to create a daily habit of practicing gratitude. You can use a notebook or a prepared journal that has a space for this practice, and simply list a few things every day that you are grateful for. While it is good to reflect and acknowledge those big things, like your family or a comfortable home; to make this practice even more effective, focus on the last 24 hours or so, so you are looking for all the little (and big) moments that brighten each day. This will help in seeing the variety of things in your life that are good, and increase mindfulness during your day as you become more aware and conscious of looking out for these moments.
The easiest way to ensure that this practice really becomes a daily habit, is to stack it onto something already established in your daily routine. For example, if you have a cup of coffee or tea every morning, place your notebook or journal in that spot, so when you sit down, you are reminded and ready to go. Another example would be to follow your morning prayers with this practice. Or if you are really rushed for time, and simply cannot take a few moments to write things down (but writing it really does help with brain processing, so it’s worth taking the time) reflect on your previous day while brushing your teeth or putting your make-up on. Eventually it will become a natural part of your routine.
The things that create a sense of gratitude in your life are deeply personal, but there are definitely some things that universally effect us all—love and connection with others, being of service to someone (even if it is a simple act of making them smile and bringing a moment of joy into their day), enjoying nature, a good meal shared with others, and peaceful moments that allow you to connect with God and your inner self.
Wishing you a day filled with moments of joy and joy in experiencing them again as you reflect in gratitude. You are enough. Keep going. 💕
